Parent-Friendly and Drummer Friendly Product Review: PDP Z5 5 piece drum set

20 Oct

Over the years I have been teaching a large number of drum students during the weeks and many of them sought my help when they were at the stage where they are ready to get their first drum set. I always love doing what I can to make their search for a good deal a little clearer. And also help anyone else in a similar situation.

The PDP Z5 5 Piece Drum kit is an entry level drum set that retails between $330-$400 depending on the retailer. The higher price points usually includes starter cymbals and all hardware.

Remember, when it comes to drum sizes, it’s: Diameter-playing surface X Depth of the drum.

What you get:
This Drum Set is constructed of Poplar Wood to create a good sound at a lower price point.

Bass Drum: 22″x16″ bass drum- pedal may or may not be included
Snare Drum: 14″ x 5″ may or may not include a pair of drumsticks.
3 Tom-toms: Small Tom 10″ x 8,” Middle Tom 12″ x 9,” and Floor Tom 14″ x 9.”
Available in other colors

Depending on the retailer this set may or may not include hardware (snare drum stand, cymbal stand, bass drum pedal).

Also depending on the retailer this set may or may not include starter cymbals (hi hats, crash/ride).

This seems to be a good starter set. If you are just looking to buy your child a set of drums for drum lessons or their first garage band this is a good way to go. I do recommend getting different drum heads for this kit relatively soon to improve the sound of the kit. Try a “fusion size pack” of Remo Pinstripe Heads for the tom-toms (10″-12″-14) or Evans G2 heads of the same ilk. And for the snare drum try an Evans reverse dot head or Remo Reverse Dot (14″). If you buy this set from a retailer that includes cymbals, all you’ll need is a separate crash cymbal. It’s fairly easy to get a starter crash cymbal for a low price.
